With profound sadness, FIA has announced the loss of beloved colleague Corinna Schempp, head of European policy and regulation. Corinna was an expert in her field and worked tirelessly to advocate on behalf of the derivatives industry.
“No words can express our sorrow and grief,” said FIA President and CEO Walt Lukken. “For 11 years, Corinna filled our days with energy, excitement and, of course, zeal for her German heritage. She could not walk down the street in London or Brussels without seeing someone she knew. She lived and breathed our markets and our industry. She devoted incredible time and attention to building relationships, mentoring young colleagues, and encouraging all of us to live life to the fullest.”
“Corinna was a passionate and generous soul who loved people, her job and life. We will miss her incredibly.”
Corinna joined FIA as director of European regulation in 2014 and set about building relationships with FIA’s members and policymakers across Europe and beyond with passion and vigour. She made such a positive impression that four years later, she was appointed to set up and lead FIA’s Brussels office.
There is something quite beautiful about Brussels, Corinna once said. “It is this combination of all these member states sitting in one town. When you walk across Place du Luxembourg in the summer – where a big crowd of people gather for an Aperol Spritz – you can hear the murmur of many different European languages, and it really is a beautiful sound.”
Corinna quickly endeared herself to market participants and regulators in Brussels with her expertise and warm personality. A dual-qualified lawyer in both Germany and the UK, Corinna divided her time between FIA’s Brussels and London offices.
Before joining FIA, Corinna worked at LCH.Clearnet Limited as a senior regulatory advisor in the compliance and regulation team. She joined LCH.Clearnet in May 2011 from EDX London, a derivatives exchange and joint venture between the London Stock Exchange and Sweden’s OMX AB, where she was the legal and regulation manager.
Corinna will be remembered for her unrivalled knowledge and understanding of European financial policy and as a professional who cared deeply about her work. She will also be remembered for her exceptional kindness and generosity, her positive energy and sense of humour, and for bringing joy to all who knew her.
