A Technologist's Guide to the Futures Market

Exchange & Clearing Ecosystem: A Primer for Technologists

Course Overview

Developers and technologists in commodities and derivatives markets are frequently handed detailed business requirements — connect to a feed, reconcile a batch, support a new product — without the market context to understand why those requirements exist. They know how to build systems; they don't always know how the ecosystem around those systems actually works. That gap slows delivery, creates blind spots in design decisions, and makes it harder for technical staff to push back intelligently on requirements that don't quite make sense.

A high-level, non-coding primer on the exchange and clearing ecosystem, built for developers, architects, and technical Project Managers. No languages, frameworks, or specific vendor tooling — this is about the market landscape, the players, and how the pieces fit together.

Course Detail

  • Market structure & players: Exchanges, clearinghouses, FCMs, and trading firms — who each of them is, and what they need from the systems around them.
  • Trading vs. clearing: Who is coming to trade vs. coming to clear, and how their system needs differ.
  • Connectivity: How connectivity actually works — FIX and other protocols, APIs, market data feeds, colocation — at a conceptual level.
  • System integration: How order flow, clearing, and settlement systems talk to each other across firms, and where file- and batch-based processes still quietly run the day.
  • Schedules & dependencies: Trading calendars, end-of-day cycles, settlement windows, and the dependencies that make timing non-negotiable.
  • Critical failure points: Where the ecosystem is fragile — the points where a single system, feed, or firm can create outsized downstream risk.
  • Innovation & under investment: Where the industry is investing in modernization, and where technology has historically been under-invested.

Who Should Attend?

Developers, engineers, and technical product owners at exchanges, clearing firms, FCMs, trading firms, and vendors who need working fluency in the market they build for — without needing to become traders.
