Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives was 2.56 billion contracts in the month of March, up 4.6% from the previous month and up 10.7% from March 2017. On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first three months of the year was 7.367 billion contracts, up 23.4% from the first three months of 2017. Total open interest at the end of March was 854.1 million contracts, up 3.3% from a year ago.
The report includes statistics from two exchanges recently added to the FIA database: the International Energy Exchange, a commodity exchange in China, and LedgerX, a cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. The report also includes statistics for the bitcoin futures contracts that began trading on the Cboe Futures Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange last December.
