Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month’s data on futures and options trading is accessible in two formats: a spreadsheet accessible through the link below and a set of interactive visualizations called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from October 2023:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 13.61 billion contracts in October, the second highest level ever recorded. This was up 0.8% from September 2023 and up 94.6% from October 2022.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 11.16 billion contracts in October, up by more than 134% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.45 billion contracts in October, up 9.7% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first ten months of the year was 108.1 billion contracts, up 59.8% from the first ten months of 2022. The majority of that increase came from equity index contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 83.77 billion contracts, up 93.2% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 24.32 billion contracts in 2023 so far, up 0.1% from 2022.
Total open interest at the end of October was a record setting 1.28 billion contracts. The October total was up 3.4% from September 2023 and up 6.9% from a year ago.
